The City of Norwich, capital of Norfolk and steeped in history and charm, no visit to this part of the world would be complete without a trip to Norwich.
Over 1,000 years the town has been expanded and developed, some streets and alleys dating back to medieval times. The fact that these sites are still in use enables visitors to see history in tact. Visitors love to see the ancient cobbles and architecture, particularly around the Cathedral Square.
Lord Nelson spent his childhood here and was educated at Norwich School before quickly rising through the ranks of the Royal Navy, there is much to discover about his time here.
In Victorian times several household names became synonymous with Norwich, including Colman’s Mustard which still survives today. The company was founded in 1814 and moved the factory site in 1858, the property is still in existence today. Colman’s have always supported local farmers and still source as much of their ingredients as possible from surrounding suppliers.
With so much to do it would be hard to know where to start, whether you are looking to amble around the shopping centres or delve into the cultural history, Norwich is the place to be. Boasting a diverse town centre full of the usual big names as well as many independent traders and boutiques, not to mention the pubs, cafes and restaurants with enough choice to suit every palate.
The City of Norwich has not one but two cathedrals and both are stunning examples of both ancient and modern architecture and have immaculate gardens for quiet contemplation. Don’t forget a visit to Norwich Castle and learn even more about the city’s past. Dating back to the 1100’s and built as a Royal home it is now a museum and houses various collections depicting Norwich’s history.
For football fans Carrow Road is the place to be as the home of Norwich City FC. Stadium tours are available as well as merchandise from the Canaries shop, even Delia Smith is on the board!Various events are organised throughout the year and you may be able to take in the atmosphere of a game if the team are playing at home during your visit.
Being right on the western edge of The Broads, Norwich is also a great place from which to hire a boat and explore the waterways of east Norfolk. With many quaint villages hiding off the beaten track, a day or two on the Broads is a fantastic way to experience the famous Norfolk skies and the riverside hostelries that offer a warm welcome and amazing menus.
