The Norfolk Broads

The Norfolk Broads is a network of man-made waterways.  Extending across from Norwich to Great Yarmouth and from Lowestoft to the south up to East Rushton in the north.  All of the waterways make up the Broads National Park.

From Neolithic times, several inter-navigable waterways can lead you through Saxon, Viking and Roman eras. More recent history includes the famous wherry building industry and the Victorian promenades and gardens.

Explore the wilder side of the Broads to find many of Norfolk’s Hidden Gems. Included are the windmills that were once used to drain the land or grind the flour. You can also find locks, once used by the boats carrying goods prior to the railway systems. These marsh areas are now the haven of a variety of wildlife so don’t forget your cameras and binoculars.

National Park

Upwards of 8 million visitors a year enjoy the unique diversity of The Norfolk Broads. The area has become the country’s third largest National Park.  The park includes 9 nature reserves and 28 sites of specific scientific interest. Conservation and education are high on the list of priorities of objects for management here. The Norfolk Broads needs to be preserved so that it can be enjoyed for many years to come.

The best way to discover The Broads is by boat and with so many options to choose from the possibilities are endless. Boats can be hired by the day or for longer holidays, for fishing trips or for exploring hidden nooks and crannies.

Norwich from the river

It’s possible to moor in the centre of Norwich and take a shopping trip! One of our very own Norfolk’s Hidden Gems, our property in the name of The Moorings, has a day boat that will do just that. Take an hour-long trip west from the property in Bremerton to the heart of Norwich.  You can leave the boat tied up at the manned Norwich Yacht Station near to Norwich Railway Station. StationWhile parked there you could visit the shops in the city or the nearby Riverside complex.  The entertainment complex houses a cinema, eateries, bowling alley, pubs and plenty more activities. You could even go into town for a pizza and eat it on the way back.

Many visitors return year after year to experience the famous Norfolk Broads skies.  True finds are the quaint little villages and the idyllic peace that can only be found on the Broads. With more waterways than both Venice and Amsterdam, no two, day trips or holidays are the same and can only add to the experience of your holiday. Many walks and cycling trails are also accessible from the waterways so there’s no need to spend all your time on the water.

With access to so many of the cafes, pubs, restaurants and attractions that Norfolk and Norwich itself have to offer, the opportunity of discovering the Broads is too good to miss.
